1843-Charles Dickens publishes A Christmas Carol.
1847- Emily Bronte publishes Wuthering Heights
1850-First British Public Library Act, permitting the establishment of public libraries. Salford Museum and Art Gallery is said to have been the first unconditionally free public library
1851-Arts and inventions were showcased in the newly built Crystal Palace. The event was called The Great Exhibition
1859-George Eliot publishes her first novel Adam Bede which goes over controversial ideas and not common for a lady
1859-Charles Darwin publishes The Origin of Species. Science has been brought to light.
1865-Lewis Carroll publishes Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
1871- Publication completed of Encyclopedia Britannica.
1883-Robert Louis Stevenson publishes Treasure Island
1890-Sir Arthur Conan Doyle introduces the famous character Sherlock Holmes in his novel A Study in Scarlet
1891-Education is free. Children under 13 now attend school.
1901-Queen Victoria dies. Hence the end of the era.
